HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!
As temperatures dipped down into some potentially disaster-laden figures, folks across Western Wisconsin are trying to warm their hearts and those of their significant others with Valentine Cards, boxes of chocolates and roses of many colors.
Folks will be trudging from their warm homes, out into the cold for Valentine’s Day dinners at such places in the area as The Barrel House in Frederic; Pour House in Siren; Bon Ton in Luck; Crow Bar in Webster and Suzy Q’s Snowshoe Tavern in Cushing — plus many, many other places.
On Saturday (Feb. 15) the 10th Hole Bar and Grill between Danbury and Webster will host, “Hot Wheel Races,” starting at 2 p.m. They are sure to delight visitors.
On Monday a rather unusual event takes place at the Dairy General Store at Burnett Dairy in Alpha.
A “Beekeeping Seminar” takes place from 6-8:30 p.m. in an attempt to give potential Beekeepers a chance to know and understand the situation.
The area is known for its ice fishing contests and they are not over yet. The “Whopper” Ice Fishing Contest is going to play out once again at the Clam Lake Narrows from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, February 22, east of Siren on Highway 70.
That same day the Whitetail Wilderness at Webster will feature, “Snowfest”, including a vintage snowmobile show, chicken feed, medallion hunt, meat raffles and music by the Circuit Breakers in the evening.

Jim Evrard

Goodbye to a Friend of the Outdoors
On February 10 the area lost a good friend of the outdoors in Jim Evrard of Grantsburg, 77. He battled for a short time with cancer.
A former Peace Corps member, he also served the Peruvian Wildlife and Forestry Service in Cuzco, Peru.
Jim worked for 31 years for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as a wildlife researcher and project manager for the Glacial lake Grantsburg Work Unit.
He was honored with the Wisconsin Award given by the Wisconsin Wildlife Society in 2004 — the highest honor given by the professional society in this state.
Even though he was retired, he gave a lot of his time to the Wisconsin Sharp-tailed Grouse Society, the Friends of Crex, The Crex Meadows Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, the Wisconsin Chapter of The Wildlife Society and so much more.
Jim also enjoyed writing and penned over 400 articles for the Wisconsin Outdoor News and the Burnett County Sentinel.
Always an avid hunter and fisherman, Jim also liked camping with family, reading, and writing.
He and wife Shirley had two daughters, Lori and Terri.
We say goodbye to Jim but we will always have his contributions to the outdoors in our area.
